Definition
InterPlanetary File System. A decentralized, peer-to-peer file storage protocol that stores data across a distributed network instead of centralized servers. Often used to store NFT metadata and Web3 content.
Why It Matters
IPFS provides a more permanent, censorship-resistant alternative to centralized file hosting. NFT metadata stored on IPFS is less likely to disappear than files hosted on AWS or similar services.
Example
When an NFT's image is stored on IPFS, it's assigned a unique content hash. As long as anyone in the network 'pins' that file, it remains accessible worldwide.
