Private Key

Definition

A secret cryptographic key that proves ownership of a blockchain address and authorizes transactions. Never shared with anyone. If someone obtains your private key, they have full control of your funds.

Why It Matters

The private key is the fundamental proof of cryptocurrency ownership. Unlike a bank password, there is no reset mechanism — losing it means losing your crypto permanently.

Example

A Bitcoin private key looks like: 5HueCGU8rMjxECyDialwujzvtFhHGJNqyz. This string of characters is the only proof of ownership of your Bitcoin.
