What Is Blockchain?
A blockchain is a distributed digital ledger that records transactions in a way that makes them virtually impossible to alter or hack. Think of it as a digital notebook that thousands of computers share and verify simultaneously.
How Blocks Work
Each block contains:
- A list of recent transactions
- A timestamp
- A cryptographic hash of the previous block
- A unique hash for itself
This chaining of blocks creates an immutable record of all transactions.
Consensus Mechanisms
Proof of Work
Miners compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles. The winner adds the next block and earns rewards.
Proof of Stake
Validators are chosen based on how much cryptocurrency they've staked as collateral.
Why Blockchain Matters
Blockchain technology has applications far beyond cryptocurrency:
- Supply chain management
- Healthcare records
- Digital identity
- Voting systems
- Smart contracts
